Road Trip Grosetto

Road Trip Grosseto

Must do activities while in Italy is a road trip through the province of Grosseto, in the Tuscan region, for exploring back roads, lovely farms, fantastic wines, interesting hill top towns like Montemerano, Saturnia, thermal baths at Cascate del Mulino and the restaurant La Solina.

Road trip through Grosseto region

My mother came to visit me during my stay in Livorno Italy, I took her on many adventures. One day we drove down the Autostrada to the Grosseto exit, but instead of heading to the city, we went left and followed farm roads on our way to Saturnina. We stopped at wineries and walked through a couple towns. Montemerano was one of the coolest, it’s a hilltop town with cobble stone streets, narrow alleys lined with shops and charming cafes. Above it all an amazing view of the area.

Cascate del Mulino

Hot springs and Saturnia were our next stops. The Sulphur waters come from rising ground 37.5°C  water which creates cozy pools for bathing. Located in the municipality of Manciano, it’s just a few kilometers from the charming village of Saturnia. According to Visit Tuscany “Legend has it that long ago, tired of men’s endless wars, Saturn hurled a lightning bolt down at the earth and caused an eruption of warm sulfurous waters. These waters covered the world and quieted all of man’s chaos, leading to a wiser and more joyful mankind. …” We walked around the charming village of Saturnia, had an ice cream and coffee and then made our way over to the thermal baths for a soak. There was plenty of parking and places to sit in the water, but even in September there were a lot of people there.

The first and last time that I’ve seen a pizza vending machine the green blue sulfuric thermal baths were relaxing

La Solina Resturant

My mom found La Solina online when she was researching things she wanted to do. The property is just a mile, or two from the Cascate del Mulino at Via Poggio Bertino, 18, 58014 Manciano GR, Italy. This family run restaurant offers all homemade dishes. The bread, pasta, meats and everything on the menu is sourced locally, or nearby. La Solina provides online bookings to make sure you have a spot at this little restaurant. During the summer months I would recommend it because when we went in September there were only a couple tables available. They had people from the guesthouses and a party of ten the night we went. They are pet friendly, Mercy sat under the table while we enjoyed our lovely dinner. She of course got to enjoy some too. I ordered four courses for each of us and an appetizer to share. The wild boar pasta was amazing, I had pigeon which was my first time eating this bird, it was perfect. The stuffed squash flowers were also amazing.

An amazing dinner to end an amazing day
