My brother Miguel met me in Vienna toward the end of January 2017. We spent two nights in Vienna and then took a train to Budapest. Of course, we grabbed a piece of the famous Sachertorte cake, It’s a chocolate cake that looks similar to a torte, but without a crust. The Austrian Franz Sacher first invented the cake in 1830s, specifically for Prince Wenzel von Metternich. We enjoyed the cake while on board the train to Budapest.
Vienna was extremely cold, we were layered up, but that cold wind went right through us. My flight was delayed due to ice on the plane, but once I arrived we explored the city through the night. We woke up early the next morning and ate a huge breakfast at the Hilton Vienna This hotel has one of the best Hilton breakfasts I’ve experienced. We continued to explore sculptures and architecture throughout the afternoon. They were all incredible, but nothing was as breathtaking as the churches.
The Church of the Jesuits is decorated with ceiling and wall paintings and spirals of pink marble.
My only regret was that I didn’t get to see more, but the trip was cut far too short to see much because we headed to Budapest that very evening, taking a five-hour train ride. The scenery on the train was beautiful. Austria is really pretty.
When we arrived in Budapest stayed on the Buda side, the palace side of the river. The beautiful Hilton hotel where we stayed was renovated from an old church, it is next door to another amazing church and the Fisherman’s Bastion.
The palace has some incredible sculptures, and we were able to witness some impressive sights, including the changing of the guards. Parliament was a beautiful building, we were fortunate to witness protesters outside the building yelling into speakers from their warm cars.
We took the sight-seeing bus to avoid freezing from the walking. We also went to the indoor market and bought kilos of paprika and some tins of goose pate. We tried to see as much of the city as we could in the three days we were there, and we were mostly successful. But I’m sure we will be back.
